Patterns & Sketching

Posted Saturday 19 May 2007 and filed under: Just Sharing, Prints & Patterns

The 2 little dumplings are still sick (as is hubby), so I haven’t had a chance to sew anything. I have to admit that it’s been a nice break from the sewing machine - instead, I’ve been able to work on some more patterns while sitting with the girls and trying to keep them entertained :-)

My goal is to visit the fabric-printing place by the end of June and actually get at least one of my designs printed. Due to cost considerations, I need to keep the designs down to one colour. Here are 3 that I’ve printed out onto plain paper just to test the colour and the size of the repeats. I’d like to print them all onto a natural-coloured cotton rather than a bright-white cotton.

I like the elephants in red (the words at the bottom read “mon grand ami“, which is “my big friend” in French :-)). I’m undecided as to the colours for the pear pattern and the clothesline pattern - any thoughts?

I’ve also been sketching things in my notebook - mostly new motifs for patterns and new softie patterns. Below are my sketches for Mr Cheery Chimp. On the right are the original sketches. On the left is what I hope the new Mr Cheery Chimp will look like after I make a few adjustments - such as a narrower head, rounder body, and arms that are attached after the body has been completed.

Hopefully, I can work on the new Mr Cheery Chimp in the next few weeks as I’d like to write up a pattern for him and make it available in my shop.

But now I should really take some time to reply to emails (apologies if you’re waiting on a response from me!) and try to keep the flu bug away as I’ll be joining some very crafty and talented ladies at BlogMeet #2 next Friday! Wishing you a relaxing weekend :-)

    Hi There,
What is the “fabric printing place” that you get your designs printed on fabric? I have always wondered if there is something like that that would do small runs? Love your blog by the way, I guess I’ve been a “lurker” for a while, but really love what you are making. –shannon

I’d buy the clothesline fabric in an instant if it were printed in black. And the pears are telling me khaki or yellow green…

Love the fabrics. I’ve been lurking for a while and I guess the fabric brought out the lurker in me. Great work!

I reckon the clothesline fabric would look great in lime green, too….probably not against natural colour cotton, though. How about a leaf green? The elephants are very cute!

Oh.. the clothesline is the standout! Definately.. why not concentrate on that one.. in a couple of colours? We will buy some metres for Mikes (we’ll cut it into half yard pieces)

I hope your little family is getting better… Mine has been sick too! One in hospital!

(I love the pears too.. but i have seen quite a bit of pear-ishness in fabric and fashion land recently!)

    xx pip

I adore them! I really, really hope to see them in fabric and hopefully own them in fabric! I love the orange pears! How about navy, black or brown for the clothesline? With all the fine lines I would love to see a bold color to bring them out. They are all wonderful though, great job!

I absolutely love the pears and the orange is perfect. The elephants are so adorable too. I would totally buy both. How cute would a little girl dress or top be in those pears? So fun!

All the fabrics in waiting look very nice. And I too think the natural fabric will look great with the designs, natural color can just be used in so many more ways. Have been there when hubby and all 3 kids were sick. Will share the interesting sick year with you sometime. Hope everyone is feeling better soon….
